DMCI Homes has reaffirmed its commitment to helping promote research-driven solutions in the construction industry by donating a 2000 kN Universal Testing Machine to the Construction Materials and Structures Laboratory (CoMSLab) of the University of the Philippines-Institute of Civil Engineering (UP ICE).
The official turnover of the equipment, along with laptop computers and laboratory furniture, took place on July 28, 2023, signifying another milestone in the long-standing partnership between DMCI Homes and UP-ICE.
During the ceremony, DMCI Homes President Alfredo Austria cited the importance of research in the construction industry.
He emphasized, "Research is very important for innovations, and in companies like DMCI Homes, we always do a lot of innovations for us to be of service to the community around us and to be able to create value for our customers."
'What is not measured is not managed'
Austria also acknowledged the influence of their education at UP, particularly in Civil Engineering, instilling a sense of duty to contribute to the country.
Austria further stressed that the donated equipment represents DMCI Homes' concern for quality. "As our Chairman Sid Consunji said, 'what is not measured is not managed.' We should have the right tools and equipment to enable us to deliver good quality," he said.
The ceremony was attended by Engr. Alfonso Aliga Jr., Executive Director of UP Engineering Research and Development Foundation, Inc (UPERDFI), and Dr. Nathaniel Diola, UP-ICE Deputy Director for Planning Development and Finance.
Also present were Dr. Jose Regin Regidor, UP ICE director, and Dr. Maria Antonia Tanchuling, Dean and former UP-ICE director, who represented the UP-Diliman College of Engineering.
Ripple effect
Dr. Diola said the 2000 kN Universal Testing Machine will replace an old equipment in the CoMSLab that dates back to the 1950s. “We want a machine that can be used for research, that can be controlled through computers so we can have accurate and precise assessments,” he said.
Dr. Regidor, on the other hand, expressed gratitude for DMCI Homes' continuous support and commitment to UP-ICE's growth and development. He stated, "We are truly very grateful to DMCI Homes and to the DMCI Group in general for the continuous very strong support to the Institute of Civil Engineering."
Dr. Tanchuling, meanwhile, echoed DMCI Homes' principle of giving back to the community and highlighted how the donation's benefits would extend beyond UP-ICE, inspiring further research and academic collaborations among other educational institutions.
“Your donation will create a ripple effect. This will go a long way,” she assured Austria.
‘Unending and boundless support’
Engr. Aliga, for his part, thanked the DMCI Group of Companies for their generous donations to UP-ICE through the years, which include professorial chairs, lecture rooms, computational laboratory, canteen, and the 260-seat David M. Consunji Theater.
"We want to express our utmost thanks to the DMCI Group for their unending and boundless support to the UP-ICE," Engr. Aliga said.
