Quadruple A developer DMCI Homes is taking its sustainability initiatives to the next level by incorporating full water recycling and treatment capabilities in its upcoming residential condos, in response to the threat of a water crisis.
With these facilities, DMCI Homes aims to treat wastewater to make it suitable for general use, landscape irrigation, and maintenance of amenities.
Each water recycling and treatment facility is expected to save over 180 million liters per year according to a DMCI Homes' Design and Engineering Department study.
The pilot implementation of water recycling facilities will be incorporated in upcoming projects such as The Erin Heights in Commonwealth Ave., Quezon City; Fortis Residences in Chino Roces Ave., Makati City; and Sage Residences in Mandaluyong City.
DMCI Homes President Alfredo Austria said the initiative is in line with the call for efficient water management by the Marcos administration as the country braces for a potential water crisis due to the effects of El Niño phenomenon.
"Water is a precious resource, and it is our collective responsibility to conserve it. As we initiate this movement, we hope to inspire other condo developers to follow suit in prioritizing water sustainability," Austria said.
While DMCI Homes currently utilizes rainwater and sewage treatment facilities for landscape maintenance in most of its properties, the introduction of full water recycling facilities will elevate the sustainability efforts of upcoming projects.
Austria emphasized the need for water conservation, citing a past experience when one of the company's projects was severely affected by a water supply problem in the metro.
"Although our condos have water storage facilities, we have no control over the supply. Our water storage capacity can only hold a certain amount for a specific period," Austria said.
This prompted the company to study and invest in water recycling facilities to address the issue.
In-house experts and professional wastewater managers will oversee each facility to ensure that residents are provided with Class A, Environmental Management Bureau certified treated water, which is good for general use and toilet flushing.
For the project, DMCI Homes will be tapping into its in-house experts and working with professional wastewater management contractors to ensure a quality and efficient treatment process.
DMCI Homes is likewise consulting partner organizations with experience in water recycling such as water concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. which pioneered potable water reuse in Metro Manila.
