QC gov’t lauds DMCI Homes’ full water recycling initiative

The Quezon City government, led by Mayor Joy Belmonte, has lauded DMCI Homes for taking proactive steps in conserving water in Metro Manila.

DMCI Homes Corporate Communications Manager Butch Mendizabal recently met with Belmonte to present the full water recycling and treatment facility to be built by the company in its The Erin Heights condominium project at the corner of Commonwealth Avenue and Tandang Sora Avenue, Quezon City.

Also present during the meeting were Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability Department Head Andrea Villaroman, Assistant City Administrator for Operations Alberto Kimpo, and Engineering Department Head Atty. Dale Perral.

The Erin Heights is the first residential condominium in the Philippines with a full water recycling and treatment facility.

"We appreciate your initiatives and contributions in support of the city's advancement of sustainable practices," Belmonte told Mendizabal during the meeting.

Big help

Mendizabal, on the other hand, reassured Belmonte of DMCI Homes' unwavering support of the Quezon City government's pursuit of creating a greener and more sustainable future for its residents.

"As we lead the way in sustainable practices, our commitment remains strong in making a positive impact on the environment and enriching the lives of Quezon City residents through our eco-friendly and sustainable architectural designs," Mendizabal said.

City Engineer Perral, for his part, said DMCI Homes' full water recycling project is a big help in the city government's initiatives to support water concessionaires, Maynilad Water Services, Inc. and Manila Water Company, Inc.'s efforts to enhance water supply and distribution efficiency.

With the entire Metro Manila's heavy reliance on a single water source - the Angat Dam, Perral said it is crucial to diversify water sources.

Perral said the city government, in collaboration with the private sector, is likewise exploring alternative water sources, particularly rainwater runoff, based on World Bank studies highlighting the country's substantial runoff potential.

Moreover, Perral said the city has installed rainwater storage facilities in school buildings and government offices and is currently exploring the construction of retarding basins and ponds as engineering solutions to mitigate floods while also serving as water catchment facilities.

"The initiatives of the private sector are very important. Mayor Joy is very thankful to our private partners; that's why she initiated the Green Awards, so a lot of corporations and private entities were awarded because of their initiatives in saving the planet and environment due to climate change," Perral said.

"And insofar as this water resource is concerned, we are very thankful to DMCI (Homes) for exploring this new technology of recycling wastewater," he added.

According to the Quezon City government website, the Green Awards recognizes institutions that have made significant contributions to addressing climate change and advancing sustainable practices.

180 million liters of water savings annually

With a full water recycling and treatment facility, The Erin Heights can save approximately 180 million liters per year, according to a study conducted by DMCI Homes' Design and Engineering Department.

This facility will also be available in Fortis Residences along Chino Roces Avenue, Makati City, and Sage Residences in Mauway, Mandaluyong City.

With a full water recycling and treatment facility, DMCI Homes aims to treat wastewater, making it suitable for general use, landscape irrigation, and maintenance of amenities.

In-house experts and professional wastewater management contractors will oversee each facility to ensure that residents are provided with Class A Environmental Management Bureau-certified treated water suitable for general use and toilet flushing.
